Introducing
Andy Marper Member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists Department of Transport Certified Motorcycle Instructor, Direct Access Qualified Four Day Advanced Motorcycle Instructors Course BMW Off-Road Skills Course
Those of you who are familiar with Advanced Riding Techniques will be wondering why my details are given above instead of Mick's. Here's a message from Mick himself to tell you what's happening. I started Advanced Riding Techniques in 1996 following thirty years in the police service, most of it as a police class one traffic police motorcyclist, instructor and royal escort and even surveillance motorcyclist. At that time many advanced rider training schemes were starting up in the market, but it’s sufficient to say that in 1997 RiDE magazine appraised eight such training companies and Advanced Riding Techniques was the only one to be “Highly recommended“ by Damon I’Anson, deputy editor at that time. Now, eleven years later, it is time for me to take it a little easier, step back a little, and maybe concentrate more on my organised/disorganised tours to the continent across at www.adventure.gs, but what to do? Advanced Riding Techniques is an established name in the advanced motorcycle training field, with an enviable reputation, and with most of the customers over the years becoming firm friends who regularly travel abroad with me. I couldn’t just let the name disappear. Someone I could trust to maintain the high standards attained and expected over the years would have to take over. Step in Andy Marper from Sheffield’s MCT riding training company. I have ridden with Andy, at home and abroad, for many years, and a friendlier, more affable and competent rider you will not get. Andy’s riding skills are beyond reproach, so this year we have concentrated on his teaching skills. Being a police class one motorcycle instructor and examiner I can say that Andy’s expertise is now every bit as good as any police class one instructor. Mick Wheeler Police Class One Instructor/Examiner I thank Mick for his endorsement. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to ride with him over thousands of miles and very proud to take over a training company with such a fine reputation as Advanced Riding Techniques. I am committed to maintaining the high standards of instruction that he has set. I've been motorcycling since 1973. After a career in engineering I set up MCT, a motorcycle training company in Norton, Sheffield, with Phil Hunt in 1996. Four years later we opened up Bikesafe, a second training company in Owlerton, Sheffield. In 2006 MCT lost its training area due the redevelopment of the site and merged with its sister company, Bikesafe. I have worked for over 10 years instructing novice riders to test standard. I have benefited from thousands of miles riding with Mick Wheeler and he has spent 18 months preparing me to take over Advanced Riding Techniques.
